Tips for a Successful Mantel Installation

Mantels come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important to choose one that fits your fireplace and the overall design of your home. A professional mantel installer will be able to help you make this decision.

A mantel can serve as a great focal point in your home, so it’s essential to install it correctly. While it is possible to do this on your own, it’s best to leave it up to professionals who have the skill and experience needed for the job. Here are some tips for a successful mantel installation:

Get the Mantel Frame Right

The first step is to ensure that you have the perfect mantel frame. This will be the basis of the rest of your design. This will help to create the proper look and feel for your mantel, as well as provide support for all of your other furniture in the room.

Use a tape measure to mark the exact wall location where you want the mantel to go. This will help you to plan out how you want it to fit and how much lumber is required to build the frame.

Once you have the rough plan in place, it’s time to start building your mantel. If you have power tools, you can speed up this process, but it is possible to complete the project using hand tools.

Prepare the Mantel Shelf

The next step is to position and level your mantel shelf so that it’s completely straight and even. This will make it easy to set your shelves up properly and avoid uneven or crooked shelves. It will also allow you to be sure that your shelves are secure and that they won’t fall off.

It’s also a good idea to make sure that your shelf is placed at least 50 inches above the floor, as this is combustible height and you’ll need to comply with fire codes and guidelines.

A mantel shelf will often be attached to a cleat, which is a piece of wood that holds the mantel shelf to the wall. The cleat should be long enough to fit the width of your shelf and be able to hold it in place.

Depending on the style of your mantel, you can add additional shelves to the sides for displaying books, candles, or other items that you might need to store. You can also display framed art or other decorative pieces on the mantel for a more formal look.

Fill in the Gaps

After the mantel is fully assembled and is ready for installation, you’ll need to fill in any gaps between the mantel and the fireplace facing material (brick, tile, or marble). This will be done with inside scribe molding.

You’ll need to make sure that the scribe molding is flush with the face of your fireplace so that it covers any imperfections that may have occurred during the installation process. This will also make it easier to paint your mantel.
